“‘I got tired of being heavy, so I went on a really good regime of eating healthy and exercising for an hour a day,” Hopkins told the Daily Mail. “I’m not a nutty, macrobiotic kind of guy, but I enjoy being alive.”

His diet and lifestyle changes fell in line with his nuptials to Stella Arroyare, who has assisted him in creating a focus on fitness, as well as make better health choices.

“My wife’s no dictator, but she said I must stick to a regimen,” Hopkins told the New York Post. “Now I’m a health nut. I can’t get back into my wardrobe. I gave it all away to some mission. I tried tailoring the pants, but they look ridiculous.”

Hopkins, like many others over indulged in carbohydrates like breads, cookies and other treats. With his new lifestyle changes, Hopkins says he lives on 800 calories a day. By avoiding pastas and limiting food intake to small portions you can see the pounds start to drop off.  Occasionally, it is ok to eat a sandwich, but be careful not to indulge. Hopkins is also an exercise fanatic, power walking and working out six days a week. You do not have to go to extremes but it is important to get up off the couch and get moving!

Although experts in the health and fitness would compliment Mr. Hopkins for his perseverance on his weight loss, which was wisely spread over two years, however his eating habits are much too restrictive.  It is much healthier to keep calorie intake at no less than 1200 calories.  By reducing calorie intake too low you start losing your muscle mass in addition you set up for diet failure due to the way your mind and body work together to prevent starvation. The REAL message in this true life story is that he won the battle of the bulge by changing his mental attitude about eating.

Like many nutritionists, I believe that it’s best to approach everything in moderation. Mr. Hopkins should be applauded for working out as often as he does however it is best that individuals take breaks as well as change up their workout routines.  Never forget that succeeding in weight loss is a mental game.  Staying focused on your goals is a daily journey not the destination.
